--FATHER TOMLINSON'S ADVICE TO HIS CHILDREN--
PARLEY P. PRATT'S FIRST POEM - A FAVORITE OF J.TOMLINSON

To our dear and beloved children: My heart is filled with love toward you all, and I desire to speak a few words of comfort and exhortation while I am with you all. Hoping to ever be remember ad by you in love; knowing that you are not blind to my imperfections, I beg of you forgiveness for my erring ways.

May God help my dear children to walk in more holiness before our Heavenly Father than I have done. May you all walk in the straight and narrow path as I have tried to lead the way. But knowing by experience that we are apt to step aside from that narrow way through temptations which surround us, let us hold fast to that iron rod, which is the Word of God, and leads us to that tree of life spoken of by Lehi, as all is darkness without it. We must also keep his Commandments. Christ gave us the key by which we may know the way to go continually. Follow his example and pray always lest you enter into temptation, and be ye not doubtful but believing, knowing that Christ has promised that whatsoever ye asked in faith would be given to you. Knowing that the Father is always near and willing to hear if you ask in the name of Jesus Christ.

The aid of the iron rod that we should take hold of is Faith, repentance and humility, baptism for the remission of sins, and having hands laid upon us by those who are in authority, for the Gift of the Holy Ghost. (Read Doctrine & Covenants, 20th Section, 37th verse.) After receiving these things, let not temptation cause you to break your covenants you have made with the Lord. yield not to temptation, knowing that great condemnation will be sure to follow.

Let me mark out a few steps that lead to Eternal Life. First is to obtain an inheritance in the Church, or Kingdom of God, by obeying the initial law of baptism, thus taking the name of Jesus Christ upon you whereby you may enter into his Church and kingdom of God. Except ye become as a little child ye cannot receive these things. 3rd Nephi: 11.

Then you must be strict in obeying the laws of that kingdom. Partake of the sacrament, but if you partake urworthily ye eat and drink condemnation to your soul; therefore, partake with clean hands and a pure heart, that God's Spirit shall guide you always. When ye obey those in authority, ye obey God. Have your families sealed in the Temple.

My dear children, so far you have tried to be obedient to your parents and your God, whereby I can assure you that the blessings of God will follow you. Though trials may come, know that God is near and will protect you. Trust in Him and I feel to bless you through the authority of the Priesthood of the Son of God, with the comforts of this life and the world to come. I do it praying God our Heavenly Father to seal these blessings upon you in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

PARLEY P. PRATT'S FIRST POEM

"This is a poem I have loved very much and have recited
it in company to many of our friends." ---James Berry Tomlinson

"Adieu to honor, wealth, and fame,
And every worldly pleasure;
I bid farewell to my good name,
For to obey my Savior.
My Savior's love shall be my theme,
I care for nothing higher;
Yes, if I could advance his praise
by works of my performing,
Among those Saints of Latter Days
I would be called a Mormon,
Although they commonly are called
A poor deluded people;
Their Prophets, priests, and teachers all
Of-scouring of the Rabble.
But were not all the Saints of old
Derided by opposers?
Of light and truth, which did unfold
From Adam down to Moses?
Yes, all The holy Prophets were,
With Christ and his Apostles
Accounted as "Those Mormons" are
False prophets and imposters.
But truth is strong and will prevail
For it proceeds from heaven;
It always did and always shall
By inspiration given."
